Biofuels Factory in Brazil

Amyris, a California biofuels and renewable energy company is opening a biochemical factory in Brazil. They plan to make a genetically engineered industrial hydrocarbon called Biofene.

The company says Biofene is a renewable version of farnesene, a product used in everything from cosmetics and lubricants to diesel. The carbon footprint of Biofene is 80 to 90 percent less than farnesene, as well it results in a drop of nitrogen oxide. The factory is set to begin production in May.
